Marie Long and Vanessa Callam-Hackman have worked together since 2001, where they first met whilst working In Southwark at a centre for mothers and their children under five. When the centre closed, it didn’t take them long to decided to jump in the deep end and set up their own business. Continuing their work with children under 5, they opened a day nursery in Streatham in April 2004 and 10 years later Ministars Day Nursery is still going strong . With an eagerness to continue to build on the foundation they were establishing, the idea of a Jungle Gym / Café came to mind. “Marie and I would often stroll along our local Streatham High Road visiting various coffee shops, and we soon realised that something was missing in the area” says Vanessa. They noticed lots of parents trying to enjoy a cup of coffee whilst their children unfortunately were distracted because there was no entertainment for them. Marie continues,” We could see that the children needed somewhere to play and that a coffee plus play area was a much needed facility in the Streatham area.” With the seed of an idea in place ‘Blossom’s Jungle Gym’ was born. Next thing on the agenda was to find the right spot, a location accessible for the many carers and their children in the local area. When number 66 Streatham High Road came up, Marie and Vanessa were over the moon. With their key theme of recognising that ‘Play is a child’s work’ and that it takes on many forms, they plan to cater for a range of different ages with various activities as well as providing a nice cuppa for those all important carers. So whether you just want a nice cup of tea or coffee and a sandwich whilst your children play happily near by, or you perhaps want to hold a birthday party or similar children’s event, please come down and visit us. Blossom’s Jungle Gym and it staff look forward to seeing you soon.
