We know that creating and making music is second nature to a huge number of people today. However, for a high percentage of those music creators, recognising that they are potential income generating composers, authors and arrangers (even though these more traditional terms don’t at first seem to apply to genres such as grime, dub-step and hip-hop) can be quite a challenge.  But, more  importantly, teaching music creators how to exploit their music can be a task that is often relegated to the bottom of the 'to do' pile.

Making Money From Your Song, is a two hour seminar that seeks to address the issues of generating income from new songs, tracks, compositions and recordings, presenting a grass roots level view point, and showing how the sky is the limit.

The seminar is led by music publisher and consultant Paulette Long, (who has worked in the music industry for almost 30 years, 15 of those in music publishing).  Paulette communicates her knowledge of the various income streams that generate Money From Your Music in a very simple and effective way. For example, understanding that every time your song is played on say a BBC radio station, income is generated for the songwriter and the performer of that song, verses no income from a pirate/community radio station, whilst still recognising the promotional value that pirate/community stations bring that can then translate to ‘plays’ on legitimate stations.

Where possible physical examples will be used to demonstrate various song usages which help to make the seminar more relative to a songwriter's, artists, producers etc experience. Current rates (radio airplay, live performances, etc) will also be given to demonstrate the potential value of your song along with a step by step ‘case study’ looking at the potential accumulation of income.

Whether you’ve been working in the industry for a while or you’re a newcomer, if you want to get your head around the basics of PRS For Music, PPL, Mechanical Income, Performance Income, Synchronisation, Master Ownership and Copyright (to name a few) then make sure you attend a seminar.

The seminars usually cater to between 10 and 25 people, which gives the opportunity to have questions answered during and after the presentation.

There is also time for that all important networking session, where participants can meet like-minded people who are also seeking to generate income from their songs.  A great way to start looking for people who are serious about their craft to collaborate with.
